February Newsletter... |

February - the month of love. Home to
St. Valentines day. A time for
couples to celebrate their love for
one another, and for single people
to distract themselves by buying
expensive things they don't really
need. A new boat? Sure. The "Fresh
Prince of Bel-Air" complete series
on DVD? Of course! A new guitar? Why
not!
Friends, if I could
somehow convey an evil smile via
text, I would. I know I can use
"emoticons," but I'm saving them up
for my new television series (and
maybe a made-for-TV movie!)
Emoticon Justice. My agent says
FOX is very interested. Here's
hoping we've got another Greg
The Bunny on our hands!
But, I digress. We
could talk about my show
Emoticon Justice (a fast paced
buddy-cop comedy) until we're blue
in the face, but we're avoiding the
real point. You're single and you're
sad. But that's okay, Sound
Beach Music is here for you. We've
got fantastic distractions from the
misery that is the single life at
any price-point. So swing
on by, my easily persuaded friends. |

Cable
Madness
There's
a guy who works here named Pat. On
any given day you can walk in our
store and see him at the front
counter working on something.
Recently, he called a few of us over
to his computer to show us something
truly unbelievable: A two thousand
dollar guitar cable.
I'll
give you a minute.
Two.
Thousand. Dollars. For a guitar
cable. This is madness (Not Sparta).
This is insane. The manufacturer
claims that it is functionally
perfect. I guess that's pretty
awesome. Either way, Pat made a
valid point while we were all losing
our minds over this. He said "If I
had a $500,000 guitar rig...and I
mean guitar and amplifier, I
wouldn't want anything less than
this connecting them."

Oh, alright. I guess that makes
sense.
So now I'm sitting at
my desk a week later, writing this
article, when it hits me that I
should look into this cable some
more. I needed to know what the hype
was. So, I went to Google and typed
in "World's Most Expensive Guitar
Cable."
Words cannot describe
what I found. I found a cable that
was triple the cost of the first one
Pat found...and it was only half as
long. That's right. $6,000 for a ten
foot cable. I feel like crying. I
need to stop. I guess we've
really been hinting at cables like
this for a long time. A while back a
certain company popped up touting
the "best of the best" in home
theater cables. This being such a
huge market, people began looking
into what the real difference was
between a $200 component cable and a
$5 component cable. The truth is
that there wasn't a difference.
Now, I'm not saying
there is a direct correlation
between home theater cables and
instrument cables, but hear me out.
A cable carries a signal from your
guitar to your amplifier. As long as
all your solder joints are there,
and everything is totally intact,
the difference between cables as far
as sound quality goes is pretty
insignificant. In my opinion, that
is. This didn't stop me from just
recently picking up a very nice
Planet Waves cable for $60. Why?
It's 20 feet long, very rugged, has
a new cable end that ensures a tight
connection every time, and comes
with a lifetime warranty.
I've bought cheap cables for years,
and I've broken cheap cables for
years. One of the cheapest I've ever
owned I used during a show. Mind
you, I played in a punk band at the
time and we liked to move around a
lot. I got a little excited and
stepped on my cable, pulling it down
and out of my amp. It didn't seem
like a big deal until I tried to
plug back in and realized the tip
broke off inside my Marshall.
Luckily I could borrow an amp from
another band and keep on playing,
but it still really sucked. $60
later, I had a new input jack sans
half a cable tip.
The moral
of the story is really just this:
Don't buy into the crazy cable hype.
Do your research before throwing
down big money on a cable. There are
some companies, such as Planet Waves
and Whirlwind, that offer a better
cable at a slight premium, but it's
totally worth it. Six grand on a
cable? To me, that's an insane
amount of money. Oil sheik money.

Ibanez Fireman
Pure. Unadulterated.
Cool.
Those are the only
words I can think of to immediately
describe this musical machine
derived from the mind of the
shredmaster himself: Paul Gilbert.
While the cool shape says a lot,
it's the tone from the three
noiseless single coil Dimarzio
pickups that really does the
talking. From thick metal crunch to
airy strat-like cleans, this guitar
does it all.
This neck isn't
your typical shredder, either. Don't
expect to trade in an RG for this
bad boy. The neck is thick, built to
Paul Gilbert's exact specifications.
But don't mistake "thick" for
"uncomfortable," my metal minions.
This guitar plays like a dream.
We got this bad boy in as a
special order for one of our
employees, but we would be happy to
order you one. Call or stop in for
more information. |

Planet
Waves American Stage Cables

Since cables were
the topic of this month's article, I
figured I'd share with you my most
recent purchase. This is the brand
new Planet Waves American Stage
series cable. Cool, right?
Sure it looks like just another
cable, but look closer. The tip has
been completely redesigned, ensuring
a tight fit no matter what you plug
into. Many times, 1/4" jacks aren't
made to spec, resulting in weak
connections when your cable can't
quite hook up. The new cable tip
solves that problem.
Seriously folks, I'm a huge fan of
this cable. It's super rugged, has
that new tip, and comes with Planet
Waves' lifetime warranty. No
shipping the cable back or anything.
You could be in Reno, walk into any
Planet Waves dealer with your busted
cable, and have it replaced for you
on the spot. Now that's an
insurance policy. |

Music
Man Eddie Van Halen signature model
In the 90's,
Music Man was the guitar of
choice for Mr. Van Halen. While it
may appear a bit minimalistic,
everyone who has ever been lucky
enough to be graced by this fine
instruments presence knows that it
is all tone.
This model came
in a couple of different colors,
with the blonde natural quilt maple
top being among the rarest. It is
estimated that only about 400 were
turned out in this color. The
production of the Music Man EVH
models didn't last long, either, as
Eddie began demanding that they
produce more guitars. The beautiful
thing about Music Man instruments is
that they're all hand made. This
unfortunately meant that they
couldn't meet Eddie's production
demands, and the line was
discountinued.
Not only is
this guitar rare, but it sounds and
plays just as good as it looks. The
locking Floyd Rose tremolo lets you
add in all the little accents that
EVH is known for, while the locking
nut makes sure you never go out of
tune. This guitar is truly a gem. |

Smashy.
Jorge is down
in the dumps and Ryan wants to help
him recover, or does he? Betrayal
and musical carnage are abundant in
this month's installment of The
Raclown Saga. |
