This month, I
decided to take a look at a solo
artist that is destroying
everyone's preconceived notions
as to what a singer/songwriter
should be doing.
 John Warren plays guitar and
sings. But it's more than that.
He yells at the top of his lungs
in crowded kitchens, basements,
and back yards. While these
make-shift venues are a
staple of the underground scene
that has been surging lately,
it's rare that you'll find a
solo guitarist captivating the
crowd just as much-if not
more than-the big local indie
band you'll find headlining.
For
people who like:

Jackson Jihad -Paul
Baribeau -Elliot
Smith -Kimya Dawson
-Bomb The Music Industry
Warren plays music that tugs
at your heart strings with every
word, leaving you wanting more.
And don't confuse him with any
open mic playing singer/songwriter. His music is
unforgiving, brutally honest,
and passionate. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone these
days who can honestly tell you
that they believe in every
single word they sing. John
Warren does, and he'll make you
a believer, too.
"Survival Songs," John's latest
album, was released on Friendly
Neighborhood Records in
September, 2009. This record
was, in true DIY fashion,
recorded on a laptop in his
friend's basement. Not that it
matters. As the description on
the Friendly Neighborhood
Records website says: "This is
music in it's rawest form." It's
passionate and heart felt.
Head over to his myspace for
show dates and news, or go to
the Friendly Neighborhood
Records website to download the
album for free.
